Pontoon Boat Guide - Your Guide to On-Water Fun!

Party Guide…

Host a
Raft Up

“The more, the merrier, so get ready to share beverages, snacks, music, stories and conversation.”

Rafting up is one of the most popular social activities in the pontoon boat world. You and your fellow boaters can create your own private island in a secluded cove and enjoy hours of picnicking, swimming, sunbathing, listening to music, laughing and bonding.

The most important thing to remember when planning a raft-up with friends: Be prepared. Each pontoon boat should carry at least two fenders and four lines, including a bow line, stern line and two spring lines. And it’s never a bad idea to bring along extra lines and fenders, just in case someone else comes up short.

You’ll also want to make sure you have a good anchor and appropriate tackle. Your pontoon may be the anchor boat, so you’ll want to be ready; set your anchor, and when you’re certain that you’ve got a firm bite, the other pontoon boats will raft up to you.

On the other hand, if you’re going to raft up to the anchor boat, approach slowly with fenders on the side that will be secured. Tie off the bow line first, then the stern and finally the spring lines. Make sure they’re tight, but not so tight that you’ve compressed the fenders. And make a mental note to periodically check all lines and fenders to ensure that all is well.

Because raft-ups are social events, other boaters may approach and ask to join you. The more, the merrier, so get ready to share beverages, snacks, music and conversation.

Finally, when the raft-up is ready to break, outside yachts should leave first. Slip the spring lines and then the stern, leaving the bow line for last.

Party Tips

When arranging a raft-up with pontoon boat friends, you can add to the fun by planning a theme or special meal for the occasion. One great idea is a “Build Your Own Burger” Buffet. Any pontooners with rail-mounted grills can be in charge of the cooking, while each boat can host a different “fixings” station.
